Chest Opening with Shoulder Harness—Iyengar Yoga with Props

Chest Opening with Shoulder Harness

Kathy Cook

Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher

Shoulder harnesses can help release neck tension and promote good sitting habits.

Often, we sit in positions that create neck tension and a sunken chest, which can compress the abdominal area.

This compromises our breathing and reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain. As a result, the cervical spine #7 becomes over-rounded, the shoulders become over-stretched, and the chest muscles become lax.

This can lead to tightness, soreness, and discomfort, and over time, numbness and tingling can occur due to compression in the discs.

Using a shoulder harness is a simple way to develop intelligent action, sensitivity, and relief.
